Spring is in the air and it’s time to prepare your HVAC system for spring! Well….almost. While we’re not quite out of the brisk woods yet, warm weather’s right around the corner. At Premium Home Services, we understand that your HVAC system may not transition as smoothly as you’d like without the proper attention and maintenance. Here are a few tasks you should carry out to not only protect your system against damage, but to make sure it runs as efficiently as possible through the upcoming warmer months.

HVAC Spring Cleaning Checklist to Prepare Your HVAC System for Spring

Get a Seasonal Tune-Up

Your system worked hard this winter; it probably deserves to enjoy some TLC! Many homeowners decide to skip this crucial step and simply change gears for the cooler air as the weather warms up. One of the best things you can do for your HVAC system is having a certified, trusted mechanic come and service your system after the winter. Apart from tightening things up, cleaning out the components, and adding lubricants where needed, they may detect a problem that you may have otherwise been unaware of.

Clean the Vents

The air running through your supply vents is the same air that you and your family breathe. After a long winter, they’ll need a thorough cleaning out, especially if you or yours have gotten sick over the past few months. A cleaning will also help your system run better by keeping debris out .

Change the Filters

Your filters should be changed every few months, but it’s especially vital as you switch gears on your system. A filter catches a lot of winter’s dust and debris, but the longer it sits, the less effective it will be at keeping all of that stuff out of your indoor air and out of the engine. Heading into the spring with a brand new filter is an excellent way to wipe the slate clean — literally!

Set the Thermostat

Most homeowners want the residence a bit cooler in the spring than they did during the winter since they’ll need less warming up after being outside. Your system should have one main temperature as opposed to changing it throughout the day. A regular temperature will allow the system to be more effective at keeping you comfortable without spikes in your utility bill.

If you don’t have one already, consider investing in a smart thermostat . This device will help regulate temperature as the weather changes, but can also make sure your HVAC system isn’t heating an empty home (when all members of the family are at school, work, etc.) until it’s time for a lower setting.
